On President Barack…

Published by TheGibsonReport

President Obama may need a new speechwriter. When he uses his own words he tends to be inspiring. But when he uses the words of a 27-year old male his speeches sound more like a young lawyer. With a more seasoned speechwriter, he might have been able to deliver an inaugural speech with some metaphors and imagination. “Ask not what your country…” is memorable. Rhetoric matters so to hear “we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals” doesn’t quite cut it. What does that mean? Where’s the energy, the passion?

On paper, the Inaugural Speech of Barack Obama is a good read. It reads like a good brief. I listened to the speech on a radio as I took the Metro to work. I was left so unmoved by it that I rushed to find a copy of it. By the time I had read the speech, heard it, and then seen the president deliver it… I was convinced of one thing: President Barack Obama is no preacher! Preachers write for effect. A president has multiple audience and we probably should remember that every speech he makes is not going to be a 10 or rhetorically move us. But I do hope President Barack expands his team of speechwriters.
